Bendigo is located approximately 150km NW of Melbourne, Victoria. The traditional owners of the area are the Dja Dja Wurrung (Djaara) and Taungurung people. Bendigo started as a sheep run in 1840, but with the discovery of gold at Bendigo Creek in 1851, the town quickly became the most prosperous 19th century eastern gold mining economy. The wealth generated during this period is reflected today in the city's Victorian architectural heritage. From 1853 until 1891, Bendigo was officially named Sandhurst. The name was formally changed in 1891 to honour a local prizefighter who compared his own prowess to that of the English pugilist known as Bendigo.

We have supplied coins to the City of Greater Bendigo for many years. Our original coin featured the historic Post Office, and in 2020 we added a second coin to commemorate Bendigo's water dragon, Dai Gum Loong.

In 2022 we were asked to produce a new coin to highlight two of Bendigo's icons...the vintage trams and the Alexandra Fountain (1881). The client supplied a single hi-resolution photograph and it was decided to use one of our generic 'Australiana' images on the reverse side.

CHANGES:

Based on the photograph, the original coin design included the trees and shrubs in the background.

MOCKUPS:

In consultation with the client, it was decided to remove the background to highlight the vintage tram and the fountain. Suitable text was added and a new mockup prepared.
